December 9: Behind the Mask: Implicit Bias, Mental Health and the Hidden Struggles of Legal Professionals

Lawyers are trained to project competence and composure—but what happens when mental health challenges or substance use issues arise behind the scenes? This thought-provoking CLE explores how implicit bias—particularly around mental health—creates additional barriers to help-seeking within the legal profession. For legal professionals from historically underrepresented or marginalized communities, these barriers are compounded by a “double stigma,” where concerns about identity-based bias intersect with fears of judgment around mental health. Participants will gain a foundational understanding of implicit bias, how it impacts wellness, and why inclusion efforts must address the unspoken burdens professionals carry. The program also offers strategies to break through stigma, foster psychological safety, and build a healthier legal culture.
