• Barbara J. Fick currently teaches at Notre Dame Law School and has worked with the American Center for International Labor Solidarity since 1995, advising and teaching trade union leaders in Central and Eastern Europe on issues relating to protecting worker rights and ensuring domestic compliance with international labor standards. Fick’s teaching and scholarship concentrate on various aspects of labor law such as employment discrimination, individual rights in the workplace, and international and comparative labor law.
• Donald C. Dowling is a Partner at the firm of White & Chase in New York City. Dowling concentrates his practice on outbound international employment law (cross-border human resources law issues for multinational employers). Dowling's practice is one of two in the US ranked in the top tier in the only competitive ranking category of international labor/employment lawyers by PLC Which Lawyer?,, and Dowling is ranked by Chambers USA as one of the top 36 Labor & Employment lawyers in New York. He is also ranked by Legal 500, ABA Who's Who, ABA/IBA Who's Who and others as a top New York-based Employment lawyer. Dowling has published dozens of scholarly articles and book chapters on various aspects of international employment law, including the international law journals of Cornell and Northwestern law schools. He has spoken around the world in English and Spanish on international law topics, including presenting a paper at Rhodes House, Oxford. He serves on the editorial boards of publications including: PLC Labor & Employment; ABA/Bloomberg BNA International Labor & Employment Laws (treatise); Thomson/West International HR Journal, and EuroWatch. As an adjunct professor, Dowling teaches law school classes in International Employment Law and European Union Law.
• Terrance Collingsworth is the managing partner of the Conrad & Scherer Washington, D.C. office. A dedicated labor and human rights attorney, he specializes in litigating cases that seek to hold multinational firms accountable for human rights violations in their global operations. Prior to joining Conrad & Scherer, Collingsworth was executive director of the International Rights Advocates, the successor organization to the litigation department of the International Labor Rights Forum, where he was general counsel and executive director. In addition to his broad litigation experience, Collingsworth has developed legislative proposals to regulate labor rights in the global economy, built coalitions with groups to address human rights and labor rights issues in international forums and researched extensively the conditions for workers in developing countries.
• Marley Weiss is a professor at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law. Previously, Weiss worked as a visiting professor at the Eötvös Loránd University Faculty of Law, in Budapest, Hungary, and returned there as a Visiting Fulbright Lecturer. Weiss served as chairperson of the National Advisory Committee to the U.S. National Administrative Office for the NAFTA Labor Side Agreement and as secretary of the American Bar Association Section of Labor and Employment Law. Weiss earned her J.D. from Harvard University, and specializes in all facets of labor and employment law, including comparative and international aspects of the field.

April 22: Chicago - Contraceptive Coverage Cases Before the Supreme Court

On March 25th, the Supreme Court heard arguments in two cases brought by the owners of for-profit corporations seeking exceptions to the Affordable Care Act’s coverage of contraception, based on the owners’ religious objections. The panel will review the arguments made, explore the complex questions these cases raise regarding religious freedom and equality for employees, and whether secular, for-profit corporations are excepted by the Constitution from complying with a law because of their owners’ religious beliefs.

April 30: Webcast - Supreme Court and Informational Privacy: Bringing the Fourth Amendment into the 21st Century

On January 17, 2014 the U.S. Supreme Court granted certiorari in two cases that hopefully will force it to bring the Fourth Amendment into the 21st century. In United States v. Wurie and California v. Riley the court will consider whether the police, after arresting an individual, may look at the contents of his or her cellphone. These cases may force the court to confront a question that it has so far ducked: What is the Fourth Amendment's protection for informational privacy? That is, to what extent should people be able to keep information from the government until it has probable cause to obtain it? The presentation will address:

• Emerging issues of technology and the Fourth Amendment
• Recent cases concerning informational privacy and the Fourth Amendment
• United States v. Wurie and California v. Riley.
