May 23/St Paul: Working with the Mentally Ill Defendant (#MNlawyer)

This session will take a broad look at the development and operation of the Ramsey County Mental Health Court (RCMHC).
Attendees will learn how the court system is taking a more therapeutic approach to defendants with mental health and/or substance abuse disorders. The presenters will discuss the impact these courts have had on the individuals involved, the criminal justice and mental health systems, and describe how the community and mental health courts can work together to effectively use resources.
An  additional focus will be on how the RCMHC is able to work with the challenges of mentally ill defendants throughout the court process and the continued supervision of the defendant.
