This program examines the increasing politicization and corresponding skyrocketing expense of state supreme court contests, including states like Florida where appellate judges are on merit retention ballot and don’t face opposing candidates. “You’re going to see big money come into this state (in retention elections)”, Georgia Chief Justice Carol Hunstein says in the symposium, held on June 22, 2012, at The Florida Bar Annual Convention. “This is a historic and incredibly important moment.” The program discusses Florida’s merit retention system, which was adopted by voters in 1976, and the scandals leading up to that vote.
