Walking is an extremely complex task, when one tries to understand the mechanism of these accidents. Walking, in reality, is the process of locomotion in which the human body moves along supported first by one leg then by two and finally by the second leg. The accidents occur at the time when the body is supported by only one leg due to dynamic effects and the required reaction at the contact point with ground.
During this program, the presenters will cover:
- The mechanics of walking, gait and balance
- The difference between slip, trip and loss of balance
- Understanding coefficient of friction
- Effects of changes in friction, grade and contamination
- Measuring friction
- National standards of care
- Walking area maintenance
- Environmental issues
- Falling in different environments, public facility issues
- Conducting an investigation
- Useful evidence to build or defend such cases.

Speaker:
- Carl Berkowitz, PhD, PE, AICP, has 48 years of transportation and traffic engineering experience, served as a litigation consultant, and held various positions in industry, government, and higher education. He has extensive experience in planning, design, safety, security, construction, maintenance, operations, and management. Dr. Berkowitz holds a BCE in Civil Engineering and an MBA in Industrial Management from The City College of New York, and an MS in Transportation Planning and a PhD in Transportation Planning and Engineering from Polytechnic University (NYU-Poly). In addition to his work involving pedestrians, and virtually every form of transportation and its safety (including aviation and maritime), Dr. Berkowitz has written numerous reports and articles for major publications, chaired task forces, appeared on national television and radio, and made many scholarly presentations worldwide. He holds memberships in many transportation professional associations. Dr. Berkowitz's areas of expertise include accident analysis and studies; slips, trips, missteps and falls; pedestrians and passengers; perception-reaction capabilities; intermodal transportation, bicycles, bus, school bus, subway, ferry, cruise ships, commuter and intercity rail; escalators, elevators and moving walkways; passenger and freight terminals; speed and distance analysis; hazard and root cause analysis; human factors; rules, regulations, codes and national standards of care; railroad right-of-way and grade crossings; parking facilities; logistics and supply-chain management.
- Dr. Oren Masory holds BS, MS and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. Currently, he is a professor in the Department of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering at Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, FL. He has over 30 years of mechanical engineering experience, served as a litigation and engineering consultant and held positions in industry, as well. His research interests include robotics, automation, machine tool controls, assistive technology, and accident reconstruction. Dr. Masory is an expert on vehicular accident reconstruction; low speed rear-end collisions; slips, trips and falls; pedestrian accidents; machinery; product liability; building and safety codes; speed and distance analysis. Dr. Masory has written numerous reports and articles for major publications on the above topics. He holds memberships in ASTM and SAE.
